The Universal Paid Leave Amendment Act passed -
but now it's under attack!
Thanks to the JUFJ community, the DC Paid Family Leave Coalition, and every person, family, business, and organization who lent time, energy, passion, and creativity to the campaign, the DC Council passed a precedent-setting policy in December, 2016 - and it became law on April 7.
The campaign isn’t over yet: now we need to make sure the city doesn't water down our program or deny start-up funding! Within just a few months, the program is already under attack from big business.
We must ensure that City Council allocates enough funds to the program and that it isn’t replaced by a watered-down version that leaves out DC’s most marginalized communities. Big industry lobbyists are gunning for the replacement, but we have the people power to push back and win –– again.
Our paid family and medical leave program will help the District care for the people we love, get well when we're seriously ill, and earn the money we need, when life happens.
Now it's up to us to make sure that DC funds and supports this program. After a two-year democratic process, dozens of policy debates, hours of hearings, and thousands of citizen voices raised, we know that the Universal Paid Leave program is the best policy for Washington, DC. But the corporate lobbyists are still working to undermine it - and the Council, unfortunately, seems to be listening to them. Meanwhile, if we don't get start-up funding in the FY2018 budget, the program launch will be delayed another year.
Over 540,000 working people are waiting. Our families shouldn't have to wait any longer. It's time to dig in, demand funding, and protect our policy from the corporate lobbyists and their weak sauce.
