The next Respect DC coalition meeting is this Monday, February 6th. 

We will be discussing the many events we have planned for the coming month, including community meetings in each of the 4 wards Walmart is planning to enter; restarting canvassing around the city;and a bus tour to the Capitol Plaza Walmart site. In addition we will be discussing potential actions around the ballot initiative to ban corporate funding of elections in DC and how to begin putting more pressure on the developers of the proposed Walmart sites.

Join the Labor Seder volunteer team as we continue to plan this year's Labor Seder!
 
Volunteers will help us write the haggadah, reimagine your favorite Passover rituals to help highlight this important labor issue, research local immigration issues, and reach out to immigrant communities and make sure their voices are heard at our seder.
 
The meeting will be from 7-9, and snacks will be provided. There will be lots of opportunities to meet new people, reconnect with friends, learn, and make a real impact on some of the most pressing issues facing our region.

Celebrate the Jewish new year for the trees—DC eco-justice style!

Etz Chayim DC is partnering with local Jews to host multiple DC-relevant Tu B’Shvat sederim. We’ll explore the symbolic meaning of the seven species of the mid-Atlantic region, DC urban trees, and sustainability in our community. The seder content is inspired by Hazon, with a District flair and ideas for making a difference here at home.

Sederim will be located in: Adams Morgan (including Moishe House), Takoma, Woodley Park, and Rockville (Moishe House), Shepherd Park (Tifereth Israel).

$10 suggested donation (suggested wine donation for Moishe House DC).

The Our City Film Festival is the only festival that showcases DC-focused films. We encourage filmmakers to make films that will bring our communities together and celebrate the rich cultures, stories and scenes that make up Washington, DC.

Started in 2008 by Yachad, a DC non-profit committed to affordable housing and community development, the festival acts as an outreach effort and is now entering its fifth year. Since 2008 the Our City Film Festival has launched filmmakers' careers, helping them gain audiences, press attention, cash prizes and television deals and our loyal audience looks forward to our festival every year. We welcome everyone to Our City.

On Monday, February 13, from 6:30-8 p.m., award-winning author Ruth Forman will pull poems that have influenced and inspired her poetic voice from the shelves of MLK's Black Studies Collection and read them aloud in her inimitable spoken word style. She will also share some of her own magical poems. Please join the DC Public Library for this special program in the Black Studies Division of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.
 
 
Forman is the award-winning author of the poetry collections, We Are the Young Magicians (Beacon, 1993), Renaissance (Beacon, 1997) and Prayers Like Shoes (Whit Press, 2009), and the children's book, Young Cornrows Callin Out the Moon (Children's Book Press, 2007).
