Homelessness among singles and families is on the rise in the District of Columbia. Well after hypothermia season has ended, there are no vacancies in the individual women's emergency shelter system, and the few vacancies in the men's system are far removed from people and supportive services. People with no place to go are being denied shelter and forced to stay in unsafe places. Family homelessness in the District has risen 25% since last year, and over 200 families remain on the wait list for emergency shelter. Meanwhile, the number of available units at D.C. General family emergency shelter is continuously decreasing and the shelter is currently down to 35 units from the 75 it was operating during hypothermia season. This shelter is slated to close even as families report that they are being turned away due to a lack of capacity in the system.

Stand in solidarity with the hotel workers of Northern Virginia this Thursday, July 30th from 4:30-6:30pm at a rally and picket at the Sheraton Crystal City. Workers at this hotel are fighting back against the hotel management company HEI in response to reduced hours, layoffs, increased workloads, and the recent firings of union supporters, one who was fired five days after leading a delegation to the hotel manager.
Please come and support the hotel workers this Thursday! The Sheraton is located at 1800 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA. The closest metro stop is Crystal City. With further questions, please call DC Jobs with Justice at 202-974-8281.
to usher in a new era, bring us together and put the needs of the people
over petty political agendas. But now, he is pursuing an agenda to
privatize city services increasing the burden on DC residents through
excessive fees. DC workers want to work with the Mayor, but his style of
governance and his penchant for placing powerful moneyed interests over
the public good are not what are best for DC or its residents. In these
tough times, DC residents need a leader who will fight to save public
services, not sell them out. Join us Weds to take back DC!
