Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh and Chairman Vince Gray have introduced the Healthy Schools Act of 2009. This is a terrific bill that tackles obesity in DC school kids by raising nutritional standards, introducing locally-grown food to school meals, and expanding physical education. It also expands gardening, recycling, composting, and other environmental programs in DC schools. Come share your views about this bill and how to make it better next Wednesday, Feb 10 at 10AM at the DC Council hearing room (Room 412 of the John Wilson building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave). Learn more about it here.

Every day working people in our city have their hard-earned wages skimmed or outright stolen from them. Employers withhold tips, force people to work off the clock, pay less than the minimum or prevailing wage, pay less than promised, and sometimes run off without paying at all. For poor and working people who already struggle to make ends meet, even a small theft of wages can be disastrous for their families. Cumulatively, employers steal billions of dollars from millions of workers - money that is lost to families and communities, exacerbating the current economic crisis. Please join DC Jobs with Justice on Thursday, Feb. 18th to learn more about this hidden crime wave and how you can fight it. Workers' Rights Board Hearing Start: 6:45 pm

Our friends over at Sixth & I, in conjunction with Dvar Tzedek fellow Rachel Farbiaz, are organizing a three-part workshop investigating the meanings and methods of creative interpretation. They will explore what it means to interpret a central text, concept, or object. How do we use our interpretive faculties to make meaning in our lives? How can the interpretive traditions of religion and art inform each other and our creative and spiritual lives? In conjunction with Torah text study, we will engage with works of conceptual art and particularly the "instructional art" practiced by artists like Sol LeWitt. On April 11th, Jews United For Justice's Labor Seder will once again highlight a major economic justice issue in DC -- the protection of the social safety et. This comes at a crucial time, as the DC government is contemplating deep cuts to essential services that help working families and low-income DC residents stay in their homes, keep their lights on, and keep food on the table. Help us make sure the economic downturn is not paid for by cutting services to DC's neediest! Help us plan the largest event this spring focusing on DC's safety net.
