The next Respect DC coalition meeting is this Monday, February 6th.
We will be discussing the many events we have planned for the coming month, including community meetings in each of the 4 wards Walmart is planning to enter; restarting canvassing around the city;and a bus tour to the Capitol Plaza Walmart site. In addition we will be discussing potential actions around the ballot initiative to ban corporate funding of elections in DC and how to begin putting more pressure on the developers of the proposed Walmart sites.

Since 2008 the Our City Film Festival has launched filmmakers' careers, helping them gain audiences, press attention, cash prizes and television deals and our loyal audience looks forward to our festival every year. A new play, “Can’t Scare Me: The Story of Mother Jones,” after a successful run at Washington, D.C.’s Atlas Performing Arts Center will run again at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts Feb. 17, 2012, at 2pm. Written and performed by OBIE Award-winner Kaiulani Lee, it portrays labor activist Mother Jones and the early days of the American Labor Movement. Mother Jones “was called ‘the most dangerous woman in America,’ and “educated, agitated, and organized on behalf of child laborers, coal miners, steel workers, and all working people.” She is the inspiration and namesake of the contemporary magazine by the same name.

Meeting for our ongoing Anti-Racism initiative.
Join the Washington Peace Center to bring together the lefty/progressive/radical community to do shared planning for spring and summer. This is envisioned as a seasonal calendar check in and to follow up on work of the DC Metro Social Forum to assess the needs and strengths of the DC activist community and discuss possible collaborations & future projects.
The agenda will include conversations on:
-How has movement building changed in DC since Occupy?
-Review spring DC calendar [including building towards out-of-town mobilizations: G8, RNC, DNC]
-Review DC Social Forum assessment of DC organizing resources & DC Peoples Assembly Priorities
-Discussion: Could the needs identified in assessment be addressed through organizing on upcoming events?
-Are there projects people are interested in? perhaps small group break outs.
