Weaving together Judaism and local activism since 1998

In the spring of 1998, inspired by a class on the social justice teachings of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, a small group of long-time Jewish activists and younger union and community organizers founded Jews United for Justice (JUFJ).

A panel discussion entitled, “Fifty years of Jews Organizing for Justice in the DC Area” was organized to test the community’s interest. A modest crowd was expected, but when -- with minimal publicity – 75 people showed up, the need for a new organization became clear. JUFJ formed a group who wanted to engage as Jews in organizing campaigns focusing on local Washington, DC-area issues.

Since our inception, JUFJ has matured into an organization with a strong sense of purpose and a cohesive and growing team of volunteer leaders and members.
