Development and Communications Assistant
Jews United for Justice seeks a part-time (10-12 hours/week) Development and Communications Assistant to ensure the smooth functioning of the organization’s Development and Communications work. The ideal candidate will be extremely organized with high attention to detail, and excel at data management and office operations projects. They will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and able to handle a heavy workload without dropping the ball. The position reports to the Development and Communications Manager.
Job Responsibilities:
The Development and Communications Assistant will be responsible for the following:
- Processing donations and thank you notes
- Writing and editing content for the JUFJ website and email newsletter
- Managing and posting JUFJ website pages, ensuring high quality and timely content related to JUFJ programming and campaigns
- Maintaining the JUFJ supporter/donor database program (we use Salsa)
Qualifications:
Jews United for Justice seeks candidates who are extremely detail-oriented, excel at project management, possess strong editing skills and have comfort with web and database technology.
The Development and Communications Assistant will have:
- Experience managing multiple projects with many details
- A personal investment in precision and excellence
- Self-directed, entrepreneurial approach to problem-solving, producing high quality work
- Familiarity working with computers and databases
The following are a plus but not requirements:
- Prior experience with the databases, particularly Salsa
- Prior experience in fundraising or communications
- A familiarity with Jewish social justice work
- Knowledge of local issues of social justice or community organizing
This job will pay $13-15/hour for 10-12 hours per week.
Community Organizer
Jews United for Justice is a community organizing group in the Washington, DC area that mobilizes the Jewish community to stand with our allies in other communities to work for progressive social change that makes the region better for everyone. We have an amazing team of committed volunteer leaders, and the staff’s role is to support and multiply our activists’ impact. Our four-person staff is funny, friendly, enjoys working together, and is dedicated to making change. In recent years we’ve won new taxes on high income earnings to fund critical anti-poverty programs; living wage laws; and legal protections for workers.
JUFJ is seeking a full-time Community Organizer to join our growing staff to strengthen the organization’s activist base and serve as lead staff on JUFJ’s upcoming Montgomery County (MD)-based campaign. The ideal candidate will excel at building relationships and working with a team to make an impact. He or she will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and able to handle a heavy workload without dropping the ball. The position reports to the Program Director.

The Community Organizer will be responsible for the following:
- Partnering with volunteer campaign co-chairs and leaders to plan and lead a local community organizing campaign. This includes developing campaign strategy and planning campaign actions, events, and meetings.
- Building JUFJ’s base of volunteer leaders by meeting with prospective leaders and representatives from local synagogues and organizations
- Supporting and training active leaders and community members to successfully take on increasing leadership roles
- Supporting JUFJ’s educational programs and other organizing efforts as needed

- A sense of humor and enjoy working in a collaborative team setting
- The ability to master a complicated political landscape quickly and thoroughly
- Access to a car to attend meeting locations that are not accessible via public transit

- Familiarity with Jewish social justice work
- Familiarity with the Washington-area Jewish community
- Familiarity with the concepts and methods of broad-based organizing (through IAF, Pico, Gamaliel, or DART) or with the methodology of other community organizing groups such as Midwest Academy

Community Organizer AVODAH Fellow
Are you a young adult (21-26) looking to make a difference? Come work with Jews United for Justice and help make the Washington region more equal and just by organizing the Jewish community to support workers' rights, immigrant rights, and key safety net programs that benefit the most vulnerable in our community. This unique opportunity is offered through AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps, and combines stipended full-time work with group living and weekly opportunities to learn about ways to make change in the world and the Jewish connection to social justice.
Candidates must be able to start in DC by August 28 to participate in AVODAH orientation.
About the Job: Community Organizer
Jews United for Justice leads Washington-area Jews to act on our shared Jewish values by pursuing justice and equality in our local community. Specific duties and responsibilities of this position:
- Staff one of JUFJ's community change campaigns
- Manage JUFJ's campaign selection process
- Build JUFJ's base of volunteer leaders by conducting one-to-one relational meetings with prospective leaders and ally organizations
- Support volunteer leaders in developing campaign strategy and planning campaign actions, events, and meetings
- Work side by side with allied organizations to build relationships with, educate, and mobilize low-income and immigrant communities and communities of color to advance campaigns
- Increase the capacity of existing JUFJ leaders by planning and implementing leadership development trainings
- Work to deepen JUFJ's relationship with area Jewish institutions such as synagogues and Jewish community organizations
- Represent JUFJ at coalition meetings

High Holidays Children's Service Leader
Rabbi Bob Saks is looking for someone to lead a one hour service for children and their parents on the first morning of Rosh HaShana and on Yom Kippur morning. The services are at Kennedy High School on Randolph Road in Montgomery Cty. and are offered under the name Am Yisrael. These services have been offered to the community for 18 years. Pay for the two one-hour services is $500, plus reimbursement for travel and expenses for service material. The services attract children between 4 and 12. The role of the Development & Communications Manager is to broaden JUFJ's foundation of support by expanding our donor base and increasing the organization's visibility among the Washington area Jewish community. The full-time position reports to the Executive Director.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develop and manage the implementation of a comprehensive fundraising strategy for Jews United for Justice, in the areas of major donors, foundation relations, and individual giving, working in collaboration with the Executive Director.
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective major donors
- Manage institutional funding relationships - identify new foundation prospects, develop relationships with program officers, write grant applications and reports
- Develop and implement a communications strategy to support the organization's programmatic and fundraising initiatives, including media outreach, website, publications, and donor solicitation materials.
Requirements:
- 3-5 years of experience in progressive political advocacy, non-profit management, and/or community organizing; familiarity with the Jewish community is preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years experience in non-profit fundraising, with demonstrated success in cultivating and soliciting major gifts and foundation grants
- Strong interpersonal skills; persuasive public speaking ability; superior writing and editing skills; significant experience in dealing effectively with high net worth individuals
- Excellent planning, organizational and administrative skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Excellent time management skills, with an ability to prioritize, work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Self-starter who can work independently and able to collaborate with others.
Salary range is $40,000-$50,000, depending on experience, excellent benefits.

JUFJ's annual Labor Seder is traditionally our largest event of the year. It attracts 200 members of the Jewish and progressive communities in DC to a Passover seder focused on workers' rights themes. Each year, the seder is tied to a specific JUFJ advocacy campaign, and includes an original hagadah, music, speakers, discussion, a children's program, and sustainably- and locally-grown ritual foods. It consistently serves to strengthen the ties between DC's progressive Jewish community, the local labor movement, and JUFJ's allies in the community. The role of the spring 2009 intern will be to support JUFJ's Labor Seder, as well supporting other programmatic and administrative areas of JUFJ's work.
Primary responsibilities:
- To serve as coordinator of logics and outreach for the 2009 Labor Seder, and to assist with programmatic elements of the seder as needed.
- To assist with JUFJ's programmatic work, including supporting our active social and economic justice campaigns, our Justice and Jewish Thought class, our new Green and Just Celebrations guide, and community education programs.
- To assist with JUFJ's administrative needs.

- To assist with JUFJ's administrative needs, including work on JUFJ's tenth anniversary celebration in mid-October.
