Washington Jewish Week reports on Workers rights, Immigration, & Kosher meat

The Washington Jewish Week reports on the ongoing investigation of workers' rights violations, at the Agriprocessors kosher meat processing plant in Postville, Iowa.  Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld of Ohev Sholom-The National Synagogue called for a temporary suspension of the sale of Agriprocessors meat by local stores and caterers

Stopping short of calling for a boycott of Agriprocessors was Jews United For Justice, a D.C. organization that focuses on worker rights. In a statement, the organization said that while it was concerned about the reports from Agriprocessors, "we must consider them in the light of the fact that workers are exploited at meat packing plants across America, and our response must address this larger reality."

While urging caution, "suspending purchases of Agriprocessors' meat should be the option of last resort," said the organization, adding that "for the workers of this plant and their families, the goal is for labor practices to improve, not for the plant to go out of business."
