Ritual, Text Study, and Programmatic Resources

JUFJ provides a variety of tools to help you make purchasing decisions that are more in line with the Jewish values of righteous giving and repairing the world.

We have created a wallet tallis: a sleeve that you can put over your credit card.  It includes a series of questions to ask yourself before you make a purchase:

  • Is this something I need?
  • Can I borrow one, find one used, or make one instead of buying new?
  • Was it made with fair labor practices?
  • Was it made with environmentally preferable materials?
  • Was it made well enough to last?
  • Will using it require excessive energy?
  • Will this purchase enhance the meaning and joy in my life?

Second, we have created Green and Just Celebrations: A Purchasing Guide for Washington's Jewish Families .  If you're preparing for a wedding or Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration, this guide will help you make spending decisions in line with your priorities and values.  Go to this page to learn more.

JUFJ creates an original, interpretive Passover haggadah each year for our annual Labor Seder.

In 2008, the focus was DC Voting Rights. Download the 2008 Hagadah , or the 2008 Labor Seder Supplement , a two-page addition to a traditional Passover seder.

In 2007, the Labor Seder focused on the rights of Domestic Workers. Download the 2007 Hagadah .

Each Labor Day weekend, Labor on the Bimah engages over 30 area congregations to focus on workers' rights during Shabbat services. Download the 2006 resource packet on Immigration and Immigrants' Rights here .
