Invest in DC: FINAL PUSH.
The DC Budget fight is coming to an end. The basic question is, what's more important?
Finding funds to keep homeless shelters open, ensure residents have access to affordable housing, and continue income assistance for needy families with children?
...OR, Eliminating a proposed 0.4% tax increase on income over $200k that 85% of DC residents support?
In particular we are focusing on Councilmember Mary Cheh, who is out of step with her constituents and opposed to the tax increase.
If you are a Ward 3 resident, please join us Sunday May 22 for a bagel brunch with Councilmember Mary Cheh at which we will ask her to be accountable to the people of DC and her Ward and support the tax increase as we do. This is an absolutely key action that has the potential to move her and make a big difference; please invite and bring your Ward 3 friends and neighbors.
Wherever you live, please call your Councilmember (link to our partner Save Our Safety Net includes Council phone numbers and talking points) and the at-large Councilmembers, and sign our petition supporting tax increases. Keep up with the fight for a fair budget in local media and blogs, and feel free to contact Invest in DC organizer Dan Gordon with questions.
And, if you want to get really mad, read this encyclopedic, searing article on the anti-tax, anti-poor stance that the Council is taking: "GOP-Style Democrats Slash DC Budget: Homeless Moms Already Given Bus Tokens, Not Shelter" (Huffington Post).
