Decriminalize Montgomery County Launch

Montgomery County
Gene Lynch Urban Park
8410 Colesville Rd

Since 2018, JUFJ has been part of the local movement to transform public safety in Montgomery County. Some of the core campaigns of this movement launched in 2020, including a focus on ending the practice of treating Montgomery County Public School students — especially Black and brown students — as criminals. To continue the organizing for decriminalization of young people in schools and drivers in traffic stops, the effort has been renamed as Decriminalize Montgomery County, and you’re invited to the launch party! Join Young People for Progress, JUFJ, and other advocates on Sunday, October 22 at 3:00 PM at Gene Lynch Urban Park in Silver Spring (8410 Colesville Rd) to learn about what we can do together to forge a path towards safer traffic enforcement, a fairer education system, and a community where all residents can live and thrive without criminalization.

Montgomery County Council Final Vote: Policing Advisory Commission

Montgomery County
Montgomery County Council Building
100 Maryland Avenue, Rockville, MD

Join JUFJ and our partners for the final council session vote on Bill 32-23. As introduced, this bill would have significantly reduced the power of the Policing Advisory Commission to hold police accountable — but thanks to powerful organizing, the bill was voted out of committee without these harmful provisions. Mobilize with us to show the council we want the bill to pass out of full council without weakening amendments! We will meet at the Montgomery County Council Building at 1 PM ahead of the 1:30 PM full council session.

Understanding Montgomery County’s School to Prison Pipeline

Montgomery County

Across the country, including right at home in Montgomery County, the "School to Prison Pipeline" pushes young people from public schools into the criminal legal system. Black, Brown, and disabled students are disproportionately targeted by the school-to-prison pipeline.

Please join our partners in the Silver Spring Justice Coalition and Racial Justice NOW! for a virtual conversation with Dr. Elaine Bonner-Tompkins from the County's Office of Legislative Oversight to discuss a recent report about the School to Prison Pipeline in Montgomery County.

Jewish tradition teaches that the Divine encompasses both justice and mercy — every child should have the chance to grow and learn, not be discarded and punished.

Join JUFJ’s Racial Equity and Policing Team for a teach-in on restorative justice from Amyra Hasan, campaign organizer at Young People for Progress.
