Baltimore Shavuot and City Council “Taxpayers’ Night”

Baltimore
Baltimore City Hall
100 Holliday Street, Baltimore, MD

Shavuot is a Jewish holiday celebrating the Torah and the beginning of the harvest, and it reminds us to reaffirm our communal values. It is often observed by eating dairy foods, studying all night, and reading the Book of Ruth. This year, Baltimore City Council's Taxpayer Night begins just before Shavuot. Join us as we and our partners celebrate Shavuot and testify to the City Council to remind them that, as the Book of Ruth points out, the bounty of the harvest should be used to meet everyone’s basic needs.

All of us deserve a life with dignity, respect, and safety. Jewish tradition teaches that in a just world, all people — regardless of race, income, or zip code — would have what the Torah calls dei machsoro, resources sufficient for their needs. But here in Maryland, giant corporations and the very rich are hoarding so much wealth that many Black and brown Marylanders can’t afford housing, food, or childcare. We need to come together again to say that it’s time for everyone’s needs to be met, and for the wealthiest to pay their fair share. Join us in Annapolis or on Zoom for the Senate Budget & Taxation Committee hearing on SB0766, which will help create a more equitable tax plan.
