How did we determine our agenda
for Maryland General Assembly 2023?
Jews United for Justice works in coalition and partnership with grassroots and advocacy groups, especially those led by and made up of directly impacted people and communities, to build and win issue campaigns. With a grounding in Jewish values and a focus on racial equity, we build people power to achieve specific goals, such as passing legislation and increasing local government investments in key programs and policies. As we build on our organizing and advocacy from the past few years, we prioritize deepening relationships with existing partners and coalitions and honoring the commitments we have made in past years.
We engage in a full scope of work on a limited number of campaigns to maximize our effectiveness, and impact other campaigns in a more limited way by submitting official JUFJ testimony and/or signing JUFJ’s name to a list of supporters. To determine our agenda for the Maryland 2023 legislative session, staff and the Maryland Core Team (JUFJ’s MD volunteer leadership team) took the following steps: 1) assessed JUFJ’s capacity; 2) asked current coalition partners how JUFJ could most strategically support their campaign priorities for 2023; 3) shared possible campaigns with the JUFJ community for feedback; and 4) created our agenda based on this feedback, plus another round of conversations with partners.
We work with these coalitions and partners:
- CASA
- Maryland Coalition for Justice & Police Accountability
- Maryland Youth Justice Coalition
- Renters United Maryland
- Time to Care Coalition
- Women’s Prerelease Equity Coalition
If coalition priorities change, we will make adjustments as necessary and update our base and the broader community. For more information about our agenda setting process for the Maryland 2023 state legislative session, click here.
